Avoid Screen Burn-in – The How and Why It Happens

Published

on

Screen burn-in is starting to take form as a problem in OLED displays in the newer generation smartphones. Although it is not much of a huge issue, it’s in fact not an issue at all but is however significant to the ones who are particular about the displays on their devices.

The major cause of this problem is the varying lifecycle of the components that produce the display light. The brightness of these components withers off with time, and thus the panels that reproduce color also get affected. Every display panel experiences some or the other sort of color change as they age, and this can be reduced by using more clever software, but it can be overlooked that some parts of the screen panel age faster as compared to the other parts owing to the burn-in issue. This can lead to a shift in the coloring pattern and consequently leave ghost images behind

With the introduction of smartwatch technology in the modern day smartphones, screen burn-in can occur due to different life-spans of the green, blue, and red LED subpixels that are utilized in the OLED panels. The areas of the display that are static in the device, like the notification bar or the navigation buttons, are more prone to experiencing screen burn-in as compared to the other dynamic and moving displays.

The explanation to this is that these blocks of the display constantly show only one color while the rest of them, i.e. the rest of the screen, has moving variable blocks of display and there is no need for just one component to keep displaying the same color for a prolonged period of time.

How can it be avoided?

Albeit a small one, this problem has been brought to the notice of the smartphone manufacturers, and they have in-turn begun to ponder over ways to avoid this problem.

To begin with, Samsung has begun the use of pentile subpixel arrangement in its AMOLED display ever since the launch of the Galaxy S3. Increasing the size of the blue pixel requires a less current drive to provide the required amount of lighting. The lifespan of an LED can be improved by using lower currents as their driving forces. It also pushes away the time it would take for any noticeable shift in its color.

Although this solution does not solve the problem of the different aging spans of the screen panels, it still is a start. It is just buying time for the parts to age, rather than solving the problem at the root level.

Apart from the hardware, a number of software solutions can also be implemented to mitigate the screen burn-in problem.

The manufacturers of the Android Wear products enable the ‘burn protection’ option that regularly shift the screen contents by a few pixels thus allowing them to spend equal time to display different colors on the screen. These days smartphones are also always equipped with the Always-On display that makes use of a similar technique.

How can it be avoided by the smartphone user:

On a personal level, a few ways can be implemented to reduce the burn-in problem. Here are a few methods:

  • Keeping the display brightness low helps in avoiding the problem since more brightness requires more current thus reducing the LED lifespan
  • The screen-off timer must be kept as low as possible as it prevents the display of static images
  • Using Immersive Mode wherever possible hides the notification bar
  • Another way is to pick a darker wallpaper and changing it from time to time
  • Using darker themes for keyboards also avoids spilling of too much of light

Even though it is not as much of a serious, it is always better to take precautions than to ruin good displays.
