Surprise! Company Seed Investment Stage Stays Strong

Published

on

The basic aim of any startup is to get a consistent stream of seed in the early stage and get larger deals later on. Over the past 7 years, the legal tech category has had a large amount of seeding thus implying a huge potential for better deals at a later stage.

As much as or even more than 50% of the funding rounds that were made in the legal startup’s departments in the years between 2011 to 2014 were in the seed stage itself. Even if the number of seed stage deals fell in the duration between 2015 and 2016, a rebound of nearly 45% of funding rounds in the seed stage was observed in this year. This is only bucking the general trend observed in 2017 in the countries like the United States where the seed level investments saw an unexplained decline.

Juro, the company that helps other countries in managing their contacts using AI, was one of the startups that attracted major funding in 2017. The startup that helps clients find affordable lawyers won the American Bar  Association’s Legal Access Award for 2017

It isn’t a guaranteed news that startups in the legal department will get back in terms of dollar volume or even in terms of deals they attract even if the seed stage investments show a lot of promise. Also, these startups are also likely to run into a few legal hurdles like Avvo had recently which can be a little difficult to overcome; and not a lot of VCs aren’t exactly fans of putting in their money to deal with lawyers — well, more lawyers.

Moreover, revamping up the technology or software services for lawyers isn’t exactly a smart move. A lot of lawyers are tedious when it comes to adapting to newer technology, because why fix what isn’t broken, right? Also, these tech startups with no prior knowledge of the law find it a little tough to adjust to a community that is in a whole different field. Owing to a lot of ethical constraints while making deals with the lawyers, ‘move fast and break things’ isn’t exactly a very great attitude to have.

That being said, the work of lawyers is already being eased by the advent of AI. To add to it, there also seems to be a need for the legal services to be available with a touch of the modern tech. Whether that means replacing lawyers altogether or making work a lot more efficient for them with tech, only time can tell.
